Band t-shirts are cool. You just have to make sure you're wearing a cool band's t-shirt. I can not stress this enough. You can't just slap on a Lynrd Skynrd t-shirt and be emo. You might be able to get away with an intentionally ironic shirt - something like Cinderella or Winger, but you better have the rest of your emo fashion in order before even trying this.
Without emo kids and emo fashion, the hoodie business would collapse. In my house, every time I come home with a new hoodie [and I have a bit of a thing for them], my boyfriend jokes about how "desperately" I needed a new one. And then gets mad at me for stealing his. Hoodies are just a staple of emo fashion, and a decent collection of them is essential to any emo wardrobe.

That said, it's important to have an emo hoodie. Because other people do wear them, you can't show up in a sports team or a college hoodie and be emo. You'll look like a dork or a poser and not remotely in touch with emo fashion. Band hoodies? Good. Emo-approved clothing company hoodies? Good. Skulls, stars, cute designs on the hoodies? Good. Plain hoodies? Acceptable. It's really easy... don't wear anything that would lead someone to mistake you for a frat boy or frat girl and you're probably good to go.

Tight, not baggy. Boys used to be all but obliged to wear girl's jeans, but that standard has been significantly relaxed. Feel free to wear boy jeans, if you're a boy [but not if you're a girl!], just make sure they fit. You don't want them hanging off your ass or ten sizes too big! You're not a thug or a skater circa 1994.

Jackets aren't very emo; get some more hoodies. Wear a lighter hoodie under a heavier one, if you're cold. Gas station jackets are also okay, but not as cool as they used to be. Nonetheless, you won't be shunned like you have the clap at an orgy if you show up wearing one.

Emo Fashion

Emo Fashion and Hairstyles:
Emo fashion has also evolved with time. There can no particular definition of this as well, but there are certain characteristics that can define Emo fashion. What has been this fascination for Emo fashion? Is it the wackiness or the weird outlook that is found very appealing to many? Of course, this is also a matter of personal opinion. Emo boys and gals have always tried to be unique in their own special way. There are no special rules as far as Emo fashion goes. The ‘dress code’ of being Emo is all about being comfortable in what you are wearing. So, how would one distinguish a true Emo guy or gal?

Though most people would scoff at the Emo look, I personally do like the cheesy and don’t-care-attitude of this ‘culture’! Skinny jeans with hoodies look fab as a representation of the Emo group. Jeans must be tight to show that you are truly Emo but make sure you can carry it off as well. The typical emotional punk movement may not really be considered fashionable by many but then the term fashion means differently to different people. Emo girls have dyed hair with asymmetrical lines and sometimes one can find nerdy glasses perched on their nose as well. A black t-shirt worn with a hooded jacket also works well. Though jackets are not completely Emo, you can go in for a lightweight kind. Loads of layering for Emo guys and girls is also important. Guys can go in for zany T-shirts worn with studded belts and fingerless gloves. Accessories in Emo fashion are aplenty ranging from hemp necklaces or tote bags. Body piercing is also considered to be very Emo! A little strange to some, but patterned knee high socks are also part of this category. Fishnet stockings worn with short skirts can work well for girls. To sport some Emo style makeup, get yourself thick pencil eyeliner and draw a thick line in one swipe. Girls need to use some clear lip gloss on their lips to complete the look. Black is the color for the nails as well, and boys, this also includes you. I am sure by now you would be thinking the Emo look is definitely taking a bizarre turn. Boys can also go in for messenger style bags to go with their skinny leg jeans. Slogans on Tees are quite common in Emo fashion. Canvas shoes and old weather beaten shoes complete the Emo look!

Emo hairstyles are quite funky to sport as well. Take a look at the group Green Day and you would know what I am talking about. Although many frown upon Emo hairstyles, these are growing in their popularity today. Girls and guys do note some of these pointers for Emo hairstyles. Shaggy hairstyles form the base of Emo hairstyles. Sometimes shaggy or sometimes spiky, these would need you to work your way around with the help of some gel and of course a hairstylist. Try some bold effects and also add a dash of color. Emo haircuts have always been characterized with black hair with bursts of colors. The look of the Emo hairstyles is such that it makes an individual style statement. Of course, people in the 80s belonging to the Emo culture are quite different from the Emo groups that are seen today. Today, most Emo hairstyles have the use of highlights as well as lowlights. Fringes and bangs are also common amongst most girls. Razor cuts that give asymmetrical lines are most sought after by girls who wish to along this path.

Emo Boys Hairstyles For 2009 Summer

Nothing will change much in the way of Emo hairstyles for the summer months except the length will get shorter to combat the heat. The longer Emo hairstyles can really be bothersome in the higher temperatures. The added hair care products used by the boys will not hold up very well either. Emo has nothing to do with flat hair but needs to be styled in many different ways to look good. The summer hairstyle needs to be short enough to be comfortable yet long enough to be styled. Add some brighter colors for a summer of fun and punk pizzazz.

Example of shorter emo hair

The greasy look that is part of the Emo hairstyle for males is not a true Emo addition. The hair becomes so damaged by the use of products to achieve this look it needs special care to bring it back to a healthy condition.

Asian emo hair

During the summer months, Emo hair for boys should be fixed in styles that require only a small amount of hair care products to hold it in place. Unfortunately, hair wax is affected by the heat and can loose its grip when it gets too hot. Keep it simple but keep it up.

Emo Makeup Trends Winter 2008-2009 Spring

The best way to finish off your emo style is with some trendy emo makeup. Both guys and girls can wear makeup as part of their emo look. However, emo youths do not wear the same makeup fashions as many other people. Instead, they have their own way of using makeup to compliment their unique, expressive style. Since the eyes are often considered the most expressive part of the body, it is this feature that emo makeup seeks to emphasize most.

Emo Makeup Tips - Fall Winter 2008 - 2009

Therefore, both genders often use thick, dark eyeliner around both the upper and lower edge of their eyes. Sometimes, this dark shade is complimented with a second band of a bold, bright color. Many people also use their eyeliner to add “wings” sweeping out from the outer corner of each eye.

Mascara also helps draw attention to the eyes, and thick, dark lashes are part of the emo look. The prominence of the eyes is completed by adding a bright eye shadow. This is often offset by a smoky gray section of eye shadow along the top or side of the lids.

Emo Makeup Tips - Eyeliner for Fall Winter 2008 - 2009

As for the rest of the face, emo youths do not generally seek to emphasize the cheeks with bronzer or blush. A paler colored flesh is preferred. However, the lips are often colored with a deep shade of lipstick or lip gloss.
